State Basketball Tournament Returns to the Mining City

November 12 – 14, 2026

There’s something special about fall in Butte, and this year, it comes with the return of a much-loved sporting event. The Special Olympics Montana State Basketball Tournament is heading back to the Mining City, and with November 12-14 quickly approaching, the excitement is building.

Nearly 1,000 athletes from across Montana, along with about 390 coaches and team volunteers, will head to Butte for three days of competition, friendship, and unforgettable moments.

The tournament tips off with an Opening Ceremony at the Butte Civic Center on Thursday, November 12. Community members are invited to arrive early and enjoy pre-entertainment by local favorite High Ore Road, performing from 5:00-6:00 p.m. The Opening Ceremony will begin at 6:15 p.m., celebrating the athletes and setting the stage for an exciting weekend ahead.

Athletes will compete in 5v5 and 3v3 basketball, both Traditional and Unified*, along with skills competitions. Games will take place in gyms throughout Butte, turning the entire community into a hub of energy, encouragement, and celebration.

The event is free and open to the public. Whether you join us for Opening Ceremony, catch a game between your errands, or spend the weekend cheering on athletes, you’re invited to be part of the experience. Spectators are welcome at all competition venues throughout the tournament.

An event of this size doesn’t happen without an incredible team behind the scenes. To make the tournament a success, more than 1,000 volunteers are needed. Whether you’re a basketball fan, a photographer, a community-minded volunteer, or someone looking to lend a helping hand, there’s a role for you.

Volunteers are needed for a wide variety of positions, including:

  • Scorekeepers
  • Athlete and team check-in
  • Awards presentations
  • Event set-up and tear-down
  • Photographers
  • Competition support
  • Hospitality and more

The best part? You can volunteer for a couple of hours or a couple of days. Every shift makes a difference and helps create an exceptional experience for the athletes who have worked hard all year to reach the state tournament.

With the countdown underway, now is the perfect time to get involved. Spread the word, invite a friend, and sign up to volunteer. Together, we can give nearly 1,000 athletes the championship experience they deserve while showing them what Montana communities do best: show up, cheer loud, and make everyone feel welcome.

Unified Sports® joins people with and without intellectual disabilities on the same team, promoting inclusion, friendship, and competition through sport.
