04 Jun 2024 State Summer Games a Success
The Magic City was abuzz this May as nearly 800 athletes, 198 Unified Partners (individuals without Intellectual Disabilities (ID) who compete alongside those with ID), 395 coaches, team volunteers, and their families converged on Billings for the highly anticipated State Summer Games. After months of dedicated practice and preparation, participants were ready to showcase their skills and compete in a thrilling array of events.
For three action-packed days, fifty-three teams from all over Montana took part in seven sports: athletics (track and field), bocce, cycling, gymnastics, golf, soccer, and swimming. Teams traveled far and wide to be part of the excitement, with Kalispell setting the record for the longest journey at 437 miles. Among these enthusiastic participants, the Billings Adults team stood out with the largest showing and proudly featured the oldest athlete, an inspiring 75 years young.
The Games had a significant impact on the local community, with an estimated economic boost of over $250,000. The Games were a financial reality due to more than 60 sponsors, locally and statewide, including Premier Sponsors: Intermountain Health, First Interstate Bank, The Dennis and Phylis Washington Foundation, and Premier Media Sponsor, MTN.
The festivities kicked off with a spectacular Opening Ceremony that included a parade of athletes, a keynote address by Mayor Tom Cole, Distinguished Service Awards, music, dancing, laughter, and the dramatic arrival of the Flame of Hope via helicopter. A big shout-out to DiA events for their phenomenal setup!
Competitions took place across the city at venues such as Rocky Mountain College, West High School, Magic City Gymnastics, MSU-B and First Interstate MetraPark Arena. More than 3,500 medals, awards, and ribbons were presented by officers from Billings and around the state. The Games were made possible by the hard work of 1,200 local volunteers from businesses, civic groups, and families who helped with everything from setup and teardown to judging, marshalling and making sack lunches at 6:30 am each day. These dedicated volunteers were the true heroes behind the scenes, ensuring that every event ran smoothly and that all athletes felt supported and celebrated.
