Special Olympics Montana is proud to celebrate the five schools recognized as 2026 National Banner Schools for their commitment to creating more inclusive school communities!
This year, three schools are returning as National Banner Schools: Capital High School, Carroll College, and GFPS Early Learning Family Center. We are also excited to welcome two new schools to the National Banner family: Elysian Elementary School and Elysian Middle School!
A Special Olympics Unified Champion School® demonstrates a commitment to inclusion by meeting 10 national standards of excellence developed by leaders from Special Olympics and the education community. These schools work to create an environment where all students and staff feel included, respected, and valued.
The program centers around three key areas: Special Olympics Unified Sports®, Inclusive Youth Leadership, and Whole-School Engagement. Through these activities, students with and without disabilities have opportunities to participate together, lead alongside one another, build friendships, and create a culture of belonging throughout their school.
National Banner recognition is more than an award. It represents a school’s ongoing commitment to inclusion and its dedication to building a community where everyone has a place. Schools must continue meeting the 10 standards year after year and reapply for National Banner status every four years to demonstrate that commitment.
Congratulations to Capital High School, Carroll College, GFPS Early Learning Family Center, Elysian Elementary School, and Elysian Middle School! We are proud to celebrate the work these schools are doing to make Montana schools more inclusive for everyone.
