Making Some Magic: 2025 State Summer Games Wrap-Up

It’s a Wrap!! The 2025 State Summer Games were nothing short of spectacular! From the roar of the crowd at Opening Ceremony to the laughter and dancing at the closing Dance Carnival, this year’s Games were a powerful celebration of inclusion, determination, and joy.

Over the course of three unforgettable days, 1,050 athletes from 56 delegations across Montana gave it their all in the spirit of competition. Whether they traveled from a few towns over or – as in the case of the Sanders County SuperHawks – journeyed more than 450 miles on a bus for over eight hours, the commitment and excitement of the  athletes could be felt at every venue.

Athletes competed in seven sports: athletics (track & field), bocce, cycling, golf, gymnastics, soccer, and swimming. Alongside them were 401 coaches and team volunteers, and the event was made possible thanks to the incredible support of 1,450 event volunteers and 50+ local and statewide sponsors who donated their time, energy, funding, and hearts to make the Games a success.

One significant aspect of this year’s event was its role as a qualifying competition for the 2026 Special Olympics USA Games, set to take place in Minneapolis, Minnesota, June 20–26, 2026. Athletes and Unified Partners competing in multiple sports had the chance to qualify for selection to Team Montana. Final team selections will be announced this August, and we can’t wait to see who will represent Montana on the national stage!

The Games officially opened with a dazzling Opening Ceremony, featuring magic and illusion that left the audience in awe. We also took time to recognize some of the outstanding members of our community:

Family of the Year – Lloyd, Kelly, and Lance Larson
Local Program of the Year – Billings Adults
Hall of Fame Inductee – Tammy Grimm

These winners join the other seven Distinguished Service Award winners recognized earlier this year. (See full list here)

Throughout the Games, a staggering 2,526 medals and ribbons were awarded. Each one represents hard work, courage, and dedication. We were especially inspired by our oldest competing athlete—an amazing 81 years young!

The Closing Ceremony brought more excitement with the announcement of the 2025 MTN Chevy Truck Raffle winner, followed by what many consider the highlight of the Games: the Dance Carnival. An epic affair, with music, games, laughter, and joy, it was the perfect end to a memorable three days.

From first-time athletes to seasoned veterans, every moment of these Games reminded us of the strength that comes from community, the beauty of determination, and the joy of shared experience.

Thank you to our athletes, families, coaches, volunteers, and supporters. We can’t wait to see what the future holds. See you in 2026!
