Dedication, compassion, and community connection—these values are at the heart of Special Olympics Montana, and few exemplify them more than the Great Falls Police Department. This year, in recognition of their long-standing support and unwavering commitment, the department has been honored with the 2025 Spirit of Special Olympics Award.

The Spirit of Special Olympics Award is reserved for individuals or groups who go above and beyond in uplifting athletes and advancing the mission of inclusion. The Great Falls Police Department has done exactly that for more than 25 years.

Whether leading the Opening Ceremony with pride, participating in the Law Enforcement Torch Run, or taking the plunge at the annual Polar Plunge fundraiser, these officers do more than just show up—they lead with heart. At events like Tip-a-Cop or the Plane Pull, they work side-by-side with athletes, treating every participant with respect, dignity, and encouragement.

A longtime volunteer and parent of an athlete captured it perfectly in her nomination: “One of the greatest qualities is their unwavering loyalty to uphold the mission of Special Olympics Montana. They are dependable, honest, compassionate, and understanding. Their dedication is evident in their many years of selfless service.”

Athletes often speak of the deep pride they feel when a uniformed officer places a medal around their neck. These shared moments build trust and joy, creating memories that last long after the games are over.

In addition to event support, officers routinely volunteer their time to help raise awareness and funding. They sell Chevy Truck raffle tickets, join school visits, and show up wherever and whenever they’re needed.

As another long-time volunteer and Special Olympics Montana Board member shared, “Their steadfast support has been instrumental in creating a positive and lasting impact on the lives of Special Olympics athletes and the community as a whole. The dedication shown by the officers and staff exemplifies the values of compassion, inclusivity, and community engagement.”
