Celebrating the 2025 Family of the Year: The Larson Family
Each year at the State Summer Games, Special Olympics Montana honors an extraordinary family whose dedication, support, and love for the movement shine brightly. At the 2025 Opening Ceremony, COO Vickie Donisthorpe had the honor of presenting this year’s Family of the Year Award to the Larson family of Billings.
The Larsons have been part of the SOMT community for more than a decade, and their story is one of commitment, teamwork, and unwavering support. As one nomination put it:
“They always go above and beyond. They set a great example to others. When coaches need help, this family steps up. They always go the extra mile for somebody that needs help.”
Another nomination highlighted the heart of their involvement:
“They help make Special Olympics Montana a better organization by honestly being a perfect example of what it means to be supportive of the movement. They are not just showing up to support their son, but they support all athletes and families. That kind of representation for this organization is a gift that often goes unnoticed.”
A Family Affair
For the Larsons, Special Olympics is truly a family effort.
Lloyd has coached cycling, athletics, and basketball for many years.
Kelly is a trained cycling coach and a dependable volunteer, always ready to lend a hand wherever needed.
Lance began his journey as an athlete in 2012 at just 8 years old, joining the original group of little soccer players with Billings Public Schools. Today, he proudly competes in athletics, cycling, and basketball with the Billings Thunder.
Whether it’s helping with event setup, hauling supplies, or stepping up when others need support, the Larsons embody the spirit of Special Olympics Montana.
Honoring Their Dedication
Their collective energy and selflessness have left a lasting impact on athletes, coaches, and families alike. This year, it was our turn to cheer for them.
We are thrilled to recognize Lloyd, Kelly, and Lance Larson as the 2025 Family of the Year. Their dedication has not gone unnoticed, and Special Olympics Montana is deeply grateful for the joy, strength, and example they bring to our community.
