2025 Local Program of the Year

Billings Adults Shine as Local Program of the Year

At the 2025 State Summer Games Opening Ceremony, one of the most anticipated moments of the evening arrived: the presentation of the Distinguished Service Award – Local Program of the Year. This honor is given to the accredited Special Olympics Montana (SOMT) local program that demonstrates the greatest improvement, best exemplifies the Special Olympics spirit and mission, and provides a strong year-round program for athletes, coaches, volunteers, and families.

This year’s Local Program of the Year truly embodies what it means to be “just like a family.” Their program offers diverse, year-round sports opportunities that reflect SOMT’s mission in action. Thanks to dedicated coaches, athletes are divided into skill-level groupings that help each participant improve more quickly while receiving training tailored to their abilities. This commitment to meeting athletes where they are ensures that everyone has the chance to compete in the sports that fit them best.

Another standout quality of this program is its strong Unified Sports presence. With regular involvement from college and former college athletes as Unified Partners, the team challenges athletes to discover their potential while fostering confidence, growth, and meaningful friendships. While competition is always spirited, sportsmanship and camaraderie remain at the heart of everything they do.

The program is led by two outstanding Local Program Coordinators (LPCs), Pattie Minchew and Kim Farley. Both are lifelong learners who not only embrace ongoing professional development but also serve as mentors to others in the SOMT community. Together, they operate with seamless organization, efficient communication, and clear roles that ensure their large program runs smoothly. Their ability to balance high expectations with genuine care sets a powerful example for athletes, coaches, and volunteers alike.

Behind the scenes, this program thrives thanks to a committed network of volunteers and coaches—many of whom have been involved for years. Their dedication creates a supportive environment where athletes are encouraged to grow not only in sports but also as leaders and contributors to their community. From fundraising efforts that keep the program strong, to service projects like cleaning parks, serving meals, and launching the first Special and Capable Exchange Club, this program is deeply woven into the fabric of its community.

And above all, they never forget to make it fun. Whether at practice, competitions, or community events, joy and inclusion are always at the center.

It is with great pride and excitement that we congratulate the Billings Adults as the 2025 Local Program of the Year! 🏆

Congratulations to Pattie, Kim, and the entire Billings Adults team on this well-deserved recognition. Your spirit, dedication, and heart continue to inspire us all.
