2025 Spirit of Special Olympics – Individual – Kris Kelly

Each year, Special Olympics Montana presents the Distinguished Service Spirit of Special Olympics Individual Award to someone whose long-term commitment exemplifies the heart and soul of the movement. This year’s recipient, Kris Kelly, embodies that spirit in every sense of the word.

For Kris, inclusion isn’t a buzzword or abstract concept—it’s a way of life. Her deep understanding of and commitment to individuals with disabilities comes not just from professional experience, but from personal connection. Her journey with Special Olympics began when her own child became an athlete, and it has since evolved into a mission that’s touched the lives of countless students, athletes, and community members.

Over the past twelve years, Kris has built something extraordinary within her local program. Her tireless work has made sports like basketball, bowling, bocce, and track and field accessible to athletes of all abilities. She ensures her team not only competes at local levels but also travels to state competitions. This means she is often logging long hours and miles through snow and rain to make it all happen. Kris’s unwavering belief in her athletes’ potential ensures every single one has the opportunity to shine.

But Kris’s dedication doesn’t stop at athletics. As a special education teacher, she leads with compassion and innovation. Her classroom is a model of real-world integration, offering life skills and vocational training to her Life Skills students. From organizing community volunteer work at the local Food Bank and Library to hosting mock job interviews with local professionals, Kris prepares her students for independent, fulfilling lives beyond school. They cook, fix drywall, change tires, sew, and learn to manage finances—all under her guidance.

Kris’s work has unified entire school communities, fostering friendships between Special Olympics athletes and their peers. Her leadership has helped create a culture of inclusion, connection, and shared joy. She’s expanded opportunities for athletes by introducing new sports like snowshoeing and swimming, and she’s consistently championed Law Enforcement Torch Run events across the region. Whether serving as a coach, committee member, or problem-solver, Kris is the first to jump in and the last to leave, always with a smile and a heart full of love.

She’s also known for her creativity in getting all kinds of people involved. Kris trains Unified Partners to serve as bocce judges and ensures students are always included in the planning and execution of events. Her efforts make everyone feel welcome, supported, and seen.

Kris Kelly is more than a volunteer or a teacher. She is a force for good, a tireless advocate, and a true champion for Special Olympics Montana. Her passion and leadership have transformed lives and built a stronger, more inclusive community. For all of these reasons and more, we are proud to recognize her as the 2025 Spirit of Special Olympics Individual Award recipient.

Congratulations, Kris, and thank you for living the spirit of Special Olympics every single day.
